Hot Tubs for Arthritis Sufferers: More than Just a Place to Relax

Increasingly, people are using their hot tub for more than just entertaining friends and relaxing after a long day.  About one in four hot-tub owners say that “medical/therapeutic benefit” is the main reason they own a hot tub, National Consumer Survey, Public Attitudes Concerning Pool and Spa Usage by Current and Prospective Owners, National Spa & Pool Institute (October 1997).

Exercising

Hot tubs can be used for more than just relaxing sore, stiff muscles and joints.  Different types of exercises can be done in a hot tub.  The warmth and buoyancy of warm water create an ideal environment for relieving arthritic pain through exercising.  Exercising in cool or cold water tenses up your muscles, which makes it easier to strain your muscles.  Warm water helps alleviate this problem.

Exercising in water supports the weight of your body. When exercising with water up to your shoulders, the water is supporting approximately 90 percent of your total bodyweight.  This makes it easier on the joints and increases your range of motion.  You can exercise to your full potential with little or no pain.

Relax, and Don’t Overheat

Before starting your exercise routine, relax and let your joints and muscles loosen.  One very important thing to remember when it comes to relaxing or exercising in a hot tub, everyone reacts differently to heat. If you begin to feel dizzy or sick to your stomach, get out of the hot tub at once.

Remember to talk with your doctor before using a hot tub to make sure it’s a good fit for your overall arthritis-control plan.

The Arthritis Foundation recommends the following guidelines for warm water exercise:

  • Be sure to consult your physician or healthcare professional before you begin any warm water exercise program
  • Exercise in warm water to encourage free movement, ease tension on joints and build muscle strength
  • Soak in the water for several minutes before exercising to relax muscles and to increase range of motion
  • Begin by moving affected body parts slowly
  • Allow enough time after exercising to relax muscles again before getting out of the water
